What Is a Mini Skid Steer Loader?
The first prototype skid steer loader was developed back in the late 1950s and since then it has undergone numerous improvement and upgrades. They come in several sizes manufactured by more than one company ranging from rather small units that have no seat and that the operator has to stand on, to the larger machines that do have a seat and roll cage.
One thing that they do all have in common though, is that they are smaller than your average tractor. This is because the skid steer loader has always been designed to perform on job tasks that were too small for a tractor, yet too big for just one man. Jobs that you would think of as two and three man task assignments.
So skid steer loaders and the tool attachments that come with them, for the most part, but not exclusively have been designed for working in confined areas. Places like inside of buildings and yards where heavy work like, say gravel moving, ditch digging, stump grinding, and dirt removal has to be done. However, as stated above, this is not an exclusive feature of them.
For instance skid steer loaders also have larger area tool attachments like snow blowing capabilities. Snow removal attachments that are smaller than what you would use on a large boulevard, yet too big for a walkway. The size that you would need for perhaps clearing a long driveway, or even maybe an average sized two lane street.
Then they also have post hole and ditch digging accessory attachments. Now there are depth restrictions with these smaller attachments but they're still adequate for residential and light commercial projects. Jobs where the ditches don't need to be more than say 3 to 4 feet deep. Leech fields, ditches for landscaping pipes, etc.
One more notable aspect of the skid steer loader is that they are designed with left and right wheel axles or tracks that are independent of each other. This in turn allows the operator to "turn on a dime". 360 degrees with no forward motion, which makes them ideal for work in even the most confined work areas.
They're also built to the same specifications that you would find in standard heavy earth moving equipment. Just to a smaller scale. This in spite of the fact that most skid steer loaders will easily fit into the back bed of a standard sized pick-up truck, and the smaller units can be loaded by one person into the back of a compact pick-up truck.
So for many of today's homeowners, the skid steer loader has become the "multitasking alternative" to the old standby lawn tractor of yesteryear. The smaller loaders cost about the same amount of money as a larger, full featured lawn tractor, yet they are capable of and can be equipped to perform so many more tasks around the home and ranch.
